Referrals provides information on your medical history and the conditions that your doctor would like our assistance with. The best health outcomes always come from a partnership between you, your specialist and your GP. Specialists are generally not available to see you at short notice between booked appointments and that is where the communication between the specialist and your GP becomes really important.
Your GP will generally send us an electronic copy of your referral through our practice software. If they have only given a copy to you, we require the Paper version or a good quality electronic version to allow our specialists to decide on the urgency of your booking. Pictures of paper versions taken on your phone can not be accepted. Referrals are valid for up to 12 months from the day they are written by your doctor. Referrals are valid for an additional 12 months from that date they are first used by the specialist practice.
Our Endocrinologists use the referral to triage your case. Referrals deemed urgent are seen as soon as possible, generally within a few weeks. Semi Urgent Referrals are seen within 12 weeks and Non Urgent referrals are given the next available appointment. We will send you a text message to confirm we have received your referral and another text to confirm that we are ready to make your booking.
You do not have to see the specialist named on the referral from your doctor. You can see a different specialist with a referral as long as they are in the same medical field, e.g. Endocrinologist.
You can ask your doctor for an Open referral (e.g., Dear Endocrinologist) which will allow you to pick any Endocrinologist within the 12-month valid period of the referral.
Your doctor can specifically Indefinite specialist referrals allowing patients to see a specialist for over a year (or indefinitely) without needing a new referral, saving costs and hassle. These are for long term chronic conditions only, such as complicated Type 1 Diabetes. A new referral is still needed if a new, unrelated health issue arises. These are great for things like diabetes ensuring ongoing communication between your GP and our specialist.
Please remember that the referral is required to be eligible for a Medicare rebate. If you do not have a referral on the day you see the specialist, Medicare will not provide you with a refund. You can not ask your GP to provide a referral on a subsequent day to cover your appointment as Medicare impose substantial fines on any Doctor who backdate referrals. It is also a Medicare requirement that referrals are only to be written during the course of a consultation.
At Toowoomba Endocrine and Diabetes, we take the time to accurately diagnose the problem and to provide you with up-to-date medical care and technologies. We see patients in new our clinic at the Toowoomba Specialist Centre on Scott Street, and via Telehealth directly to you at home or with your GP.
Appointment changes are welcome with more than 24 hours notice. Rebooking is generally based on the next available appointment so be aware that can delay your appointment significantly with our busier doctors.
Cancellations are fine with notice and we will generally leave it up to you as to how you would like to proceed. If you will not be seeking a replacement appointment, we will generally send a letter to your referring GP or specialist to let them know.
We understand that life can be busy and unexpected things can change your plans. All we ask is that you give us more than 24 hours notice so that we might be able to offer that appointment to someone else who is waiting to see the specialist.
Very short term cancellations (same day) or Failing to attend a booked appointment will be charged a $110 cancellation fee which is not covered by Medicare. Rebooking can not be done until that fee is paid. Prepayment for rebooked appointments after short term cancellation or failing to attend may also be required.
Multiple cancellations will result in you being discharged from the clinic.
Your GP is your first point of call for repeat prescriptions. We generally send your doctor a letter outlining the recommendations for medication and scripts are also logged with you My Health record.
The supply of repeat scripts through this practice, outside of consultation is at the discretion of your doctor. If you have not seen the specialist for a period of more than 3 months, an appointment will be required.
We can only provide repeat scripts for medications initiated by our doctors. We are not able to provide repeat scripts for medications prescribed by other specialists or GP’s, unrelated to your Endocrine or Diabetes treatment.
Repeat scripts attract a fee of $75.00 and require a minimum notice of two working days.
There are only a small number of specific medications that require specialist only prescribing (e.g. Growth Hormones). Those cases are managed on a case by case basis. Most other medications can be prescribed by your GP.
